Working with Children from Refugee Backgrounds & their Families

This training is suitable for Fairfield child and family service professionals working in the early childhood sector, case workers, community services, playgroups, family support, parenting groups, school hubs/centres, early childhood centres, and early intervention services.

The workshop will focus on the unique challenges of working with children from refugee backgrounds under six years of age and their parents/caregivers who have experienced war and violence. It will cover: 

  • Impact of trauma on children, their parents, and the attachment and interactions between them
  • The importance of trauma recovery and development in early childhood work with people from refugee backgrounds
  • Ways to implement biopsychosocial and systemic interventions in early childhood work with people from refugee backgrounds
  • The challenges of providing culturally appropriate evidence based interventions in working with the child and his/her family.
