Contract Terms: Fixed term contract for 12 months (with option to extend up to 3 years)
30 hours per week
$38 per hour

This is a project-based role, situated in the Southern Cross Care residential aged care facility in Greystaynes.

We are looking for a Community Development worker to undertake a key role in our initiative:

‘The 10K Project: A community well-being approach to ageing well’.

You will have primary responsibility in the planning, developing, co-ordinating and implementing of a range of community/social initiatives that intersect with the residential aged care facility, including residents and their families and staff. You will be supported and have oversight from our Senior Research Assistant based at University of Western Sydney.

We are seeking someone with a high level of ingenuity, responsibility and self-drive who loves independent work within a supportive and collegial team. The role will be located within the residential care facility so you must be able to build rapport easily and adapt to a new environment.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

The focus of your responsibilities will be to actively engage groups and individuals in the Greystaynes area such as pre-schools, primary and high schools, community centres, churches and faith-based organisations, neighbourhood centres, TAFE, Universities, arts centres, business owners and businesses, U3A’s, garden centres and voluntary organisations to make sense of the issues which affect their engagement and participation around positive ageing and dying well.

Further responsibilities include:

  • identifying community skills, assets, issues and needs
  • set goals for improvement and responding to problems and needs through empowerment and active participation
  • build links with other groups and agencies
  • prepare reports and develop interventions
  • formulate and implement strategies to build capacity
  • oversee the management of a limited budget
  • encourage participation in activities
  • general administrative duties.

RESEARCH ELEMENT

As the 10K initiative is a pilot initiative, this role requires input into the research and reporting element of the project and attendance at Project Meetings. More information on this is available in the Job Application Pack.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience working in an aged care facility
  • Demonstrated abilities in advocacy and networking skill and social network mapping skill
  • Understanding of distinction between person-centered care and community or network focussed care.
  • Understanding of death literacy
  • Understanding of building social capacity
  • Understanding of key issues facing elderly Australians and aged care
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills
  • Research and report-writing skills and the ability to interpret or present data
  • Knowledge and understanding of community and social issues
  • Demonstrated understanding of how aged care works
  • Own vehicle

  • Passion for the detail
  • Social and emotional intelligence with a love of learning
  • Experience in talking about death/dying and grief
  • Excellent writing skills

PREFERRED BUT NOT VITAL

  • Experienced in social enterprise or small company or small charity
