Findings of the 2017 NFP Governance and Performance Study by The Australian Institute of Company Directors have shown that financial sustainability is an issue for the sector, with half of board directors reporting profit margins below inflation, while many felt their organisation was taking on too little or too much risk.

Only 41% of survey respondents said their board had a formal risk appetite statement, and while 86% of directors rated the importance of their reputation as highly important, only 41% of respondents said reputation is formally considered by the board and management when making all strategic and operational decisions.

The study is the largest survey of its kind in Australia and highlights the key themes, challenges and opportunities currently facing the sector.
