The Department of Social Services’ Free Translating Service (FTS) has launched a new website and online application system. Applications can now be made on mobile devices or computers. In addition, all Medicare card holders are now eligible for the Free Interpreting Service (FIS) in medical settings.

Eligibility requirements for using the FIS in private medical settings have been simplified and expanded. Private General Practitioners, approved medical specialists and pharmacies are now eligible to access the FIS to assist in communicating with non-English speakers who have a Medicare card.

Other approved service providers, including Non-Government Organisations and licensed real estate agents, are also eligible to access interpreting services, free of charge, to communicate with Australian citizens and permanent residents who do not speak English.
