This year’s Hawkesbury Relay for Life is taking place overnight on 9–10 September. This fun event aims to raise $130,000 for Cancer Council NSW. It’s not too late to register!

Amongst the walkers and runners on the night will be Dee Cairns, who is a survivor of three different types of cancer. Dee is still recovering from lymphoma, after being diagnosed in December 2016.

“I am very happy that the date for relay was changed this year as I would not have been able to participate in May due to my treatment. With the September date, I will be able to attend and do a few laps,” said Dee.

She’ll be running as a member of team All Sorts, which is made up of people who have survived cancer.

“Many of my team mates are survivors or carers and doing that first lap is quite emotional for us. It’s great that we are there to support each other,” she said.

“I am proud to wear my survivor sash each year. I am one of the lucky ones that have survived cancer. Many others have not been so lucky. I remember family and friends that have not been as lucky and wear my sash to honour those people.”

Entertainment on the day (and night!) will include drumming from local musician and RAAF employee Murray York, who will be attempting to play his drums for the entire 24-hour event.

“I will have my kit all set up, playing to backing tracks for the duration of the walk, apart from doing the first and last lap, and of course a break for the Hope Candlelight ceremony. As long as there are walkers on the track I will be drumming out a beat,” he said.

Like many participants in the Relay for Life, Murray has personal experience of cancer, having lost his dad to cancer in 2014.
