Newstart form

The Newstart allowance of $273 p/w has flatlined, in real terms, since the early 90s and remains well under the poverty line for most recipients.

The Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS), business groups, unions and even former prime minister John Howard have argued for Newstart to increase by up tp $75 per week. The newly released Interim Report of the SA Government Select Committee on Poverty  "agrees with the overwhelming majority of submissions to the inquiry that the Newstart Allowance is far too low and falls well short of the state-based poverty line".
Other recommendations included a public transport concession scheme for the unemployed similar to that which exists for recipients of a Seniors Card, and a fairer fines and infringements system. The report will add weight to the Raise the Rate campaign currently being run by ACOSS.
