A learner's story - "Becoming a member of Parramatta Computer Pals for Seniors is one of the best things I have ever done, not only for learning but for the social side and the company and friendship of other members."

We asked a trainer from Parramatta Computer Pals what her experience was with them, and how it impacted her life.

"I joined Parramatta Computer Pals for Seniors in January 2008 to learn how to use a computer after being given one, at home of a day I would stare at the computer screen wondering how to make it work having never used computers before or had anything at all to do with computers. A friend often spoke about a great computer club he had joined so I thought I would attend a meeting to see just what this club did and I was so impressed I joined there and then. I began with beginners course, then I did every course that was available including photo courses, genealogy, internet, cardmaking and using the computer for other craft projects.

This club opened up a whole new world to me, with the help of fantastic trainers I surprised myself how much I enjoyed learning how to use the computer, after about 18 months or 2 years I was asked if I would like to be an assistant trainer and with much encouragement from the trainers I decided to give it a go, I found I enjoyed it immensely. Through the computer club an opportunity came up to volunteer at a broadband computer kiosk for seniors which is a one to one help desk, it is very rewarding to be able to help people with their computer skills and has given me a great sense of achievement.

ParraPals also have social activities and special interest groups which are very popular and through this I have made some wonderful long lasting friendships, our craft special interest group meet every month, which is a really fun morning doing a variety of craft projects, we sometimes have a birthday celebration with cake, after our craft session we move on to a café for lunch.

My husband has gathered a lot of historical information over the years which he wanted to publish but had no idea how to go about it, with the skills I had learned from ParraPals we created two CDs with text and photos, we also designed our own label for the discs, they are currently listed in catalogues at state and national libraries and police academy at Goulburn.

Becoming a member of Parramatta Computer Pals for Seniors is one of the best things I have ever done, not only for learning but for the social side and the company and friendship of other members."
