About the Opportunity

As part of the Greenacre Area Community Centre team, the role of Child and Family Caseworker/Counsellor is to:

Work directly with families to provide professional early intervention support, casework and counselling services to families and children up to 12 years of age, in line with the TEI (Targeted Early Intervention) Guidelines

The position is funded by Family and Community Services till the end of the funding period, June 2020

This is a new position and an exciting opportunity for the right person to put their stamp on the role working directly with families and developing programs to support and sustain disadvantaged and vulnerable families in line with TEI Guidelines.

Responsibility and Accountability

The Child and Family Caseworker/Counsellor is responsible to the Executive Officer and is accountable to the Centre’s Management Committee.

Specific Duties

  • Work closely with the centre’s playgroup and provide support to parents in their parenting role with children 0-5 and other older children up to 12 years of age
  • Provide one on one support and early intervention strategies to identified families in need
  • Assess external referrals and liaise with families to develop a plan to address early intervention of presenting issues
  • Provide face to face interventions to families such as counselling, education and information
  • Provide case management and support to families requiring on going assistance with complex or multiple issues.
  • Use the strength based approach to develop and implement programs aimed at building family strengthening and capacity
  • Provide assisted referrals to families or individual family members and facilitate access to community services networks for longer term assistance and support
  • Promote the service to the broader community, in particular CALD communities
  • Contribute to the resourcing of family based services and networks to strengthen referral pathways and increase access for families
  • Collaborate in the planning and delivery of family focused community activities and events such as National Families Week and encourage a high level of family participation
  • Liaise with relevant services including early childhood services, schools etc to identify family centred early intervention measures
  • Participate and contribute on local family networks, committees and other relevant fora as required
  • Significantly contribute to the development of project guidelines, procedures and work methods
  • Develop an annual Workplan in line with the Centre’s Strategic Workplan
  • Provide monthly progress reports to the Management Committee reporting achievements against the annual Workplan and prepare other reports for funding body
  • Undertake administrative tasks associated with the project
  • Maintain statistical records and prepare reports in accordance with TEI guidelines and GACC policies

  • Work collaboratively as part of the team
  • Provide input into other projects where a family centred early intervention focus is required
  • Maintain an overview of legislative changes relating to child protection
  • Observe duty of care protocols towards children and their families
  • Observe OH&S in accordance with the Centre’s policies and procedures
  • Maintain client confidentiality
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and the Annual General Meeting
  • Current working with children check
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Executive Officer in line with the role
  • Work in accordance with our Vision and Values

Selection Criteria

  • Social Work /Early Childhood Degree and counselling qualification
  • Minimum 3 years’ work experience in the provision of casework, case management, support, information and referral
  • Demonstrated professional counselling experience with the target group
  • A sound knowledge of issues affecting vulnerable and disadvantaged communities, including CALD communities
  • Demonstrated experience working with families and children up to the age of 12
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including report writing skills
  • Working knowledge of the community services sector and community networks
  • Experience in planning, monitoring, implementing and evaluating programs aimed at the target group
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Current unrestricted NSW Drivers Licence and access to a car
