ndis pre planning toolkit info and cover

The National Disability Coordination Officers (NDCO) program has launched eight new resources to support students with disability get the support they need to undertake further education. "Getting the Right Support at the Right Time with the Right People - NDIS Pre-planning Toolkits" have been designed for people with disability to use before they start their studies at a university, TAFE, or other vocational education and training provider, and when they have their first National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan or review.

“There can be a lot of thought and planning needed by anyone before they embark on a further education or training course”, says Darlene McLennan, the National Disability Coordination Officer for Northern Tasmania. “But for people with disability there can be many more additional considerations that need to be taken into account, such as personal care needs while on campus, assistive technology and study supports”.

With the introduction of the NDIS it is envisaged that it will lead to more enrolments and completions of tertiary education, and in turn better career opportunities. However, to be successful in their studies Ms McLennan advises that it’s important for potential students to get the right supports in place.

“Our experience is telling us that unfortunately. across Australia students with disability are coming to tertiary education often without the supports and adjustments they are entitled to because there is confusion about what could be funded through their NDIS plan and what assistance they will get from their tertiary education provider”, said Ms McLennan. “So, there was a real need to help people understand who they went to for the different supports they may need”.

These toolkits are a practical guide for the eight most prevalent disability types. They outline the supports people may need, who is responsible for funding them, and how they can get this in their NDIS plan and education support plan. It is hoped that it will give people with disability the information they need to help secure the right support from the right people to maximise their chances of success in their studies.
