A $2.8 billion investment into Australia's health care will mean an extra 5000 nurses and midwives will be distributed across the state, with half of these recruits sent to regional areas.

The funding boost was announced by Ms Berejiklian during the campaign trail for the upcoming March 23 election. In response to this announcement, the Opposition has announced that they will match this promise to deliver 5000 extra health care staff, with an official announcement expected in the coming weeks.

Government figures indicate the Western NSW Local Health District is set to receive at least 27 new doctors and 271 new nurses and midwives within the proposed 390 new staff.
