The school holidays are fast approaching, and Parramatta Heritage and Visitor Information Centre has a wide range of activities to suit the interests and abilities of all children. Find our about Aboriginal culture, learn about the river, unearth Parramatta's distant past, or have a go at building using some of the early building methods seen in Parramatta's heritage buildings.

Parramatta’s name comes from the Aboriginal words for “the place of eels”; These fascinating animals still thrive in the Parramatta River. Come and discover their truly amazing life cycle; create your ideal eel habitat and make an eel to take home. This program is aimed at primary school aged children, 5 to 8 years. Please wear enclosed shoes and a hat, bring water and a snack. Bookings are essential.

Bush Detective School

Make like a detective to find out how the bush works. You’ll be using a range of devices – and all of your senses – to uncover clues as to animal escape routes, hideaways and the wild lifestyles of the niche and fabulous. This program is aimed at primary school aged children, ages 7-11 years. Please wear enclosed shoes and a hat, bring water and a snack. Bookings are essential.

Digging Up Deep Time

Do you love fossils? Like to know how things work? Unearth Parramatta’s distant past in this exciting journey into deep time. Find out what Parramatta was like over 200 million years ago and what amazing critters inhabited the area. This program is aimed at primary school aged children; for families with children over 7 years age. Parents/caregivers must also book a ticket and attend.

This activity includes a city walk to look at construction methods, both old and new, that have graced the city of Parramatta. The walk will consider what materials were used, and why. Then attendees will have a go at using some early building methods to see just how effective they were. This program is aimed at primary school aged children, 7 to 11 years.
